The main active components of St. John’s wort are thought to be hypericin and hyperforin( for those who may have a medical/pharmacy background). *St. John's wort has been studied and has been found to be superior to placebos and equivalent to standard antidepressants such as Prozac , Elavil, and Zoloft. If you are already taking an antidepressant, you should not take St. John's wort without the advise of a practitioner.
Negative effects of St. John's wort may include: sensitivity to the sun; sunburn can occur if in the sun after using St. John's wort. Sunscreen or protective clothing is a must. Other complaints may occur such as dizziness, diarrhoea and anxiety, if handling plants or taking too much St. John's wort.
